The Wayward Seed Farm utilizes 3 main principles in its farming system:
Raised Beds, Composting, and Proper Crop Rotation.
Although we are not certified under the guidelines of the
National Organic Program, we meet and exceed most of these
requirements. First, no petrochemicals or pesticides are used in
our operation. Plants are given a healthy foliar feeding program
of seaweed, fish emulsion, and humus. In addition, various rock
powders and cover crops are applied to the soil to maintain a
healthy balance. Futhermore, aged compost is applied at certain
times during the year to build humus and feed important
microorganism in the soil. Our philosophy is simple; return the
fertility you remove by farming. It is the most simplistic view of
modern organics.
We are also experimenting with a new form of composting that
utilizes effective microorganisms or EM. Essentially lactic acid
bacteria are used to pickle the food and crop waste instead of
standard composting methods, also known as putrification. This
greatly speeds up the composting process and could be used in
municipalities to compost food waste from schools or
restaurants.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding our farming
practices, please call us anytime.
We would like total transparency between our operation and the
consumer. We want you to be connected to the process from
field to plate.
